Big News: Private Study Booths are Arriving!
If you visited the library yesterday, you may have noticed a bit of a construction zone inside just beyond the computer desks. We are thrilled to announce that we are installing brand-new Talkbox booths to better serve our community’s evolving needs.
We’ve already had a few great conversations with patrons asking about this addition. Some have asked why the library would invest in these, noting that the library should ideally be a silent space where personal calls aren’t the norm. These booths are actually our way of protecting that peace. Our reasoning is twofold:
- The Library as a “Third Place”: Modern libraries have evolved into community hubs—essential “third places” where people can gather, play, and study without the requirement of a purchase. While we always encourage conversational tones, we know that even hushed voices can be distracting. These booths allow us to bring back that peaceful quiet into a soundproof space.
- Bridging the Digital Divide: For many of our patrons, the library is their only reliable access to high-speed internet. In recent years, we’ve seen an increase in the need for private spaces to attend Zoom interviews, telehealth appointments, and more. These booths ensure our patrons can manage their health and careers with the dignity of privacy.
What can you use them for?
- Telehealth Appointments: Discuss your health in a secure, private setting.
- Zoom & Video Meetings: Take professional or personal calls without background noise or disturbing other library users.
- Focused Study: Escape distractions for study sessions or testing.
- Content Creation: Need a quiet spot to record a podcast or a voiceover? The sound-insulated walls make these great “mini-studios.”
- Job Interviews: A professional, neutral background and quiet environment for that online job interview.
- Language Learning: A place to practice speaking a new language out loud without feeling self-conscious. (Mango Languages is available through the State Library, just saying).
- Sensory Retreat: A calm, quiet “recharge” spot for anyone who needs a break from the hustle and bustle of a busy afternoon.
- Work from Home and More: This is the ultimate “do not disturb” zone for those WFH employees or a local writer working on a novel.
We currently have two standard booths nearly finished, each perfect for a single user. We are also hard at work today constructing a third, larger booth designed specifically for ADA accessibility, ensuring that every member of our community has a comfortable, private workspace.
Stay tuned for an official “open for use” announcement once the finishing touches are complete!
